K.M Shea/ A.M Sohma- Author Rec

If you fancy yourself a connoisseur of literature, you have probably spent at least a significant portion of your life lost in fantasies. If you cannot afford to award yourself with such a high title, you may call yourself a ‘daydreamer.’ Either way, building worlds with towering glinting spires on tops of lavish palaces, or dense and dangerous jungles or mysterious intergalactic battles filled with subterfuge is probably your cup of tea.

When written well, a book (which is literally a bit of paper with squiggles of ink on it, mind you) has the ability to help us imagine these worlds as they pour out of the artist and spill across pages into our waiting hands where we eagerly devour chapter after chapter.

But when written brilliantly, the book transports us into the very mind of the author itself. A tiny block of pages becomes an escape from reality, taking you along as an intrepid adventurer to witness epic tales filled with drama, love, and valour.

K.M Shea, or A.M Sohma (they’re both her pen names) is a criminally underrated author who writes the most incredible YA Fiction. While first discovering her work, I was doubly delighted to find that she had over 50 books, as parts of various series, and all of them were free on Kindle Unlimited. I picked up the very first one, and knew I was a goner.

From that moment on, every waking moment of my summer vacation was spent with my nose stuck firmly in one book or another. Alternatively, I could be found pacing the length of my room, biting my nails in suspense, or occasionally screaming into my pillow because ‘YES. FinaLLY!’, while my family threw vaguely concerned glances in my direction.

Be it her ‘Timeless Fairy Tales’ books which give old-fashioned fairy tales a delicious new twist, or her ‘King Arthur and Her Knights’ series that throw a teenage girl back in time to reign as the King, every single story has elements of magic, and spectacular amounts of humour. Another of my favourites is her ‘Second Age of Retha’ series which introduced me to LitRPG, and I have never been able to look back.

Whether you lean towards fantasy, adventure, sci-fi, supernatural creatures, or romance, she has something for everyone. Filled with hilarious and relatable characters, fantastic worlds beyond your imagination, and thrilling plotlines, and enough sarcasm for you to drown in, and then some more to spare, these ones are sure to have you hooked.

And well...if you find a friend who disagrees, just remember:

“Some people need a starfish in the face. It does them good.”
